Lift Up Uganda knows that reading can open the world to the children of northern Uganda. In support of that premise, Lift Up Uganda donated books in 2019 to the new northern Orthodox Diocese of Gulu so they could start a Church Library. During this planning and building period, a lending library was graciously donated to the school.
At the St. Nektarios School, a Community Children's Library was planned in 2021 and opened in 2023. During this time, COVID was declared a worldwide pandemic, as such, Lift Up Uganda faced countless challenges in the completion of the Library. In Uganda, the facility was constructed and awaited the delivery of the books. In Colorado, children's books were donated to the Community Children's Library. Many volunteers worked tirelessly to sort, clean, catalog, label, and box about 8,000 books. While the books were being collected, the next step was to locate a shipping container. There was a shortage of containers, which presented a 15-month delay in the delivery of the books to the Library. During that time, the Library was used as a classroom, a teacher's room, and a church. Molly Schuringa, the librarian, and Sue meet the shipping container and with the help of the new head librarian Daniel Owani, the team set up and opened up the library.
Most children have never even held a book so this library provides them with the opportunity few have ever experienced. Reading will expand their world and open doors to their future. The library is an excellent resource for education and learning.
